On December 9, 2013, the City of Swift Current announced a collaborative process that it has undertaken with the business community: defining Swift Current’s economic advantage and developing strategies for growth and prosperity. An integral part of this process involves engagement with our business community to discover local perspectives that will boost the extensive economic analysis that has been under way since the spring of last year.

The Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) initiative is being launched today as a means of giving local businesses a vehicle with which to significantly contribute to the strengthening of Swift Current’s business environment. The BRE initiative is spearheaded by the BRE Committee, including representatives from the City of Swift Current, the R.M. of Swift Current, Southwest Community Futures, Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association, Tourism Swift Current and Great Plains College.

The objectives of the BRE Initiative are to:

•Accurately assess the needs of local business

•Contribute to the development of a strategic action plan for economic prosperity

•Provide support/information to address immediate individual business issues and opportunities

•Enhance cooperation and consensus among businesses, local government and economic development organizations

“Helping develop our existing businesses and creating wealth and jobs is critical to the health and vitality of any community,” says Darla Lindbjerg, CEO, Swift Current and District Chamber of Commerce. “The BRE initiative has already been implemented with very good results in many countries around the globe over the last 25 years. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it not only contributes to a long range plan for the community but also yields some short-range tangible results.  I am very excited to hear what our businesses have to say about Swift Current as a place to do business. This project will assist us, as a Chamber, to identify and focus our priorities in areas that are most important to our business community.”

“This is a chance for businesses to let their voices be heard,” says Al Chilton, partner of Pharmasave and member of the City of Swift Current’s Economic Advisory Committee. “With the growth the City is seeing, now is the time for us to seize the opportunities that exist in this exciting climate. The BRE program will help us do exactly that, as well as provide a venue to identify barriers that need to be addressed.”

The balance of the Economic Analysis process is as follows:

BRE Initiative: All businesses have been mailed a letter inviting them to participate in the Confidential BRE initiative, which will be launched online today, Monday, January 27th, at www.swiftcurrent.ca/BRESurvey. The initiative will be available for three weeks, closing on Friday, February 14th.

Immediate Follow-up: The BRE process allows for businesses to voice any needs and issues they have. Upon closing of the initiative, the BRE Committee will respond to those businesses that have identified items that require immediate attention and will provide alternatives for potential solutions.

Strategic Planning:  Once the Economic Analysis, including the results of the BRE initiative, is complete the City of Swift Current, together with its Economic Advisory Committee and the BRE Committee will engage the business community in a process that addresses the findings and generates concrete strategies for economic prosperity of Swift Current and the surrounding area.

We ask the greater entire business community to work with us to foster continued growth and prosperity that will identify our community as a great place to live, work and invest.  Through business, we can build a better, brighter future for everyone.

Let’s get down to business!
